“…art remains a kind
of bridge to
religious experience.”
Pope John Paul II

A Note from Linda McCray, Organizer of Helena Exhibits
As we celebrate our 100th Anniversary and our calling to another century of faith at Saint Mary Catholic Community we are focusing on our identity.  What better way to do that than through contemporary art that invites contemplation of our patroness saint? Through the ages art has been used to teach the faith. Saint Mary Catholic Community and Carroll College are bringing this long tradition up to date and igniting the spiritual imagination of believers today.

To pass our beliefs to future generations, we need to communicate to everyone, especially our youth, in the contemporary visual language they identify with. We must accept that no past generation has the best way to express the sacred in our present day, and embrace new ways to reach future generations. For the most part, sacred art has not kept pace with contemporary art since the Protestant Reformation. Today, contemporary sacred art and contemporary mainstream art are worlds apart.

This exhibition bridges the gap between contemporary sacred art and contemporary mainstream art. Images of Saint Mary created by mainstream artists are far and few between. Artists from all over were invited to submit art for this exhibition and Father Terrence Dempsey was limited to accepting only a few. From different faith perspectives, artists have translated their traditions and beliefs into visual language to draw believers into a deeper relationship with Saint Mary.

To see all of the art visit Saint Mary Catholic Community Gathering Space, Saint Joseph Room and Carroll College Corette Library. This ecumenical exhibition is for everyone! Invite your friends and family to Highly Favored: Contemporary Images of the Virgin Mary.
